Focus on One Emotion Above All: Excitement

“When you are in a space, you need to look at things that really excite you—skip the stuff that confuses or frustrates you. If you do that, you’ll appreciate it forever.” Elise Taylor, Vogue

Tip 1 Choose art you love for your home

I am a curious person and I love asking my collectors why they chose a painting. After more than a decade of asking, I would say that buying a piece of original art is not far of from being infatuated or falling in love.

If you love what it looks like and that the paintings story is telling you something about your personal journey it often doesn't matter if it is the perfect size, or that the colors in the painting matches the interior.

I had clients rearrange a gallery wall, and make space for a piece that they love.

But I did have a couple in Australia that bought a painting because of the teal color in the background, and they where also happy!

Tip 2 Follow your favorite artists for a while

Get to know artists that you are interested in. If possible visit exhibitions or go and see them in their studio, or if it's far away the next best thing could be to follow them on social media and book a digitial meeting with a viewing of art.

Tip 3 Start collecting art  with a limited edition print

Buying an original art piece is often daunting especially in the begining. I have collectors that have started with aquiring a limited edition fine art print, for their first pieces.
In the photo you see a collector with the fineart print "Beyond Blonde".
The fineart prints comes in limited edition of 21 pcs only.

Tip 4 Buy art that feels like you and suits your interior style

What are your colors? What kind of interior style feels most like you?

Do you like to mix and create interesting contrasts from modern to classic, or do you want everything to feel cohesive and serene?

It can be very different to buy an artwork that ties a room together in colors, or to buy a piece of resitance or a focal point piece.

I would consider looking for an original artwork for the focal point, and to consider a limited edition canvas print for the pieces that ties the room together.

Tip 5 Let art inspire your interior design and be a focal poiint

An original painting or a high quality limited edition artprint can be the focal point, and the inspiration for the colors in a room. It can be an important part of color palette, but you can also pick up forms, shapes and style from an artwork to incorporate in your interior design scheme.

Tip 6 Choose framing that works with your interior

In Singapore I had a couple of collectors that feel in love with three smaller canvases of three mixed media portraits in a series.

They wheren't large enough for their space, so they had a custom framer create a large passpartout made out of linen together with a hardwood frame to make the portraits shine but to also make them big enough for the room.

Below you see a photo of the painting "Floating Soul", in it's home in Singapore.

All the limited edition prints offered at Artbyingelajohansson.com are made to fit standard frames.

Tip 7 a large painting can be easier to place than several smaller pieces

Consider buying a large centerpiece painting to bring a room together and create an atmosphere.

For a large open space with white walls and high celing a painting with a darker background with greenery can create both a sense of drama and warmth. How the painting will look will also change depending on the light and placement.

Before selecting where to hang a painting I suggest trying all available spaces in daylight and evening before hanging your artwork.

If you are unsure of what size to get we have a free service to get a mockup of the art in your space here.

Tip 8 Original paintings can be sold

Of course you should take your time when selecting an artwork, but please remeber that an original artwork is gone when it's sold.
But, sometimes a new painting finds it's way to you.
In the photo you see two collectors at the gallery the lady at the right that is smiling, finally found her painting but it was quite a story.

She had decided to buy an original piece after being to a few of my exhibitions. During the opening she was working, so she was on her way for the last 30 min and the painting she had looked at online had just sold. She came in crying, but it all turned out well as she found another painting that resonated with her story.
Selling original artwork can be a very interesting journey, both for the artist, gallerist and the collector. See available original artworks here.

Tip 9 Hang your paintings where you see them often and pair with flowers and music

Consider hanging your paintings so you see them when you wake up, enter the house or just enjoy them often.
I have one collector that says that she likes to pait her painting with flowers and sit down with a glass of wine and music on Friday night after work to enjoy her art.
It inspired me to have a florist create flowers inspired by the art for the exhibtions.

Tip 10 A beautiful home with art influences our wellbeing

Being in a space that feels and resonate with us, greatly improves our wellbeing.

Take your time to get to know what you love, but when you do decide to invest in a painting, a sculpture or a limited edition print go with what feels like you.

I hope that you got a tip or two from this blog article. I have certainly enjoyed creating it, and thinking back I wish that I had ask for permission from more of my clients to have photos from their homes.

I do love to aks the question why they selected a certain painting.

I also enjoy asking the question: "What's the story?" for my paintings on social media. So many times I have been amazed by the stories I get.

Therefore I would love to ask you to write a comment if there is an artpiece or idea that captured you.

If you need any advide, feel free to reach out. Helping clients find the artwork meant for them is my passion.
