Before Coffee captures that unmistakable feeling of longing — the quiet tension, the slow awakening, the moment before the day truly begins.
It’s that in-between state where your thoughts aren’t fully formed yet, your body is still soft, and all you want is that first warm, comforting sip.

The original artwork was painted with my grandmother’s boiled coffee from Löfbergs, a deep and nostalgic brew that produces rich, earthy pigments. This type of coffee gives the artwork a raw honesty — perfect for expressing the fragile moments before energy returns.

This piece is part of Ingela Johansson’s ongoing Coffee Collection, a series born from an accidental brush dipped into a coffee cup in Singapore in 2014. Since then, she has explored espresso, cold brew, instant coffee, grounds and boiled coffee as natural pigments — each offering its own character, tone, and emotional resonance.

Before Coffee is the moment of quiet before the world wakes up.

About the Artist

Ingela Johansson is a Swedish artist and lifelong coffee lover whose expressive art has been exhibited in nine countries. She grew up in Karlstad — a city known for the comforting scent of freshly roasted coffee from the local coffee roaster Löfbergs, a fragrance that has followed her throughout life and now finds its way into her art.

She is represented by Barlow Gallery (US) and Gallery Lienhart (Stockholm).
